Depression is the "common cold" of psychiatry. 80 to 90% of the patients I see suffer from depression.
In spite of this fact, the vast majority of patients who suffer from depression are not treated correctly or not treated at all. As a matter of fact, 50 percent of depressed patients are not seen by anyone. They don't go to their family physicians, counselors, ministers or priests. They see no one. Of the remaining 50%, only 10 to 15% are treated correctly with medications. Depression is under diagnosed and under treated.
Depression is a treatable illness, yet it remains substantially untreated.
Depression runs in families, and it's thought to be a genetic illness. The object of treatment is changing brain chemistry with medication. Therapy also helps when used in combination with medication. I see an improvement in 80 percent of the patients that I treat for depression.
