DEPRESSION
Depression is a genetic biochemical illness. It runs in families and often causes a lot of dysfunction. Fifty percent of patients suffering from alcoholism also suffer from depression.
Sleep problems (going to sleep or staying asleep) and anxiety are key signs of depression. Depression in adolescents is often missed and we lose 5,000 adolescents a year because of suicide. Most of these kids have untreated depression.
Depression is a treatable illness. Eighty-five percent of patients respond to medication. Newer antidepressants are effective and have few side effects. However, only ten percent of patients suffering from depression are adequately treated.
